The Art of Piecing Things Together

Every scrap has another story.

In this hands-on Kinusaiga (kee-noo-SAI-gah) workshop, fabrics that have already lived a life of their own come together piece by piece to create one completely new work of art.

Kinusaiga is a Japanese textile-art technique that uses fabric tucked into carved grooves to build a picture—no sewing required. We'll put our own reclaimed twist on it using rescued fabrics and foam to create something textured, colorful, and entirely yours.

What You'll Create

Create a one-of-a-kind piece of textured fabric art using reclaimed textiles, a foam base, and a kinusaiga-inspired tuck-and-layer technique. Choose your fabrics, build your design one section at a time, and watch completely different colors, prints, and textures come together into one finished picture.

What You'll Learn

  • Color, pattern, and texture

  • Composition and how individual pieces work together to create a larger image

  • Basic fabric-tucking techniques

  • Creative reuse and making art with materials that might otherwise be discarded

What's Included

  • All materials and supplies

  • Step-by-step instruction

  • Use of workshop tools and equipment

  • A finished fabric-art piece to take home

What to Expect

Expect a relaxed, hands-on workshop with plenty of fabric to dig through, step-by-step guidance, and room to make the design your own. No sewing experience is needed.

The standard process includes using a precision craft knife to cut channels into the foam. Pre-cut designs and assisted options are available for participants who cannot safely or comfortably use a craft knife.

  • Friends, date nights, and creative get-togethers

  • Textile-art and upcycling lovers

  • Anyone who enjoys detailed, hands-on projects

  • Beginners—no sewing experience needed
