Shadow as the Medium
Create with what isn’t there.
Explore light, shape, distance, and negative space by making artwork where the shadow becomes part of the final piece. Participants build and arrange simple forms, then experiment with illumination and placement to transform those materials into something completely different on the wall.

What Is Shadow Art?
Shadow art uses light and negative space as creative materials. Instead of focusing only on the object being built, participants think about the image that object creates when light passes around it.
A small adjustment in angle, distance, or placement can completely change what appears in the shadow.
What You’ll Make
Participants create a three-dimensional arrangement designed to cast an intentional shadow image.
The physical sculpture may look abstract, strange, or completely unrelated to the final image—which is exactly part of the fun.
What to Expect
We’ll experiment with light sources, shapes, positioning, and distance before building a final composition.
Participants can test ideas, move pieces around, and see their artwork change in real time as the light shifts. There is plenty of room for experimentation, and no drawing or traditional art experience is required.
Why Pick This Workshop?
Choose Shadow as the Medium for a group that loves optical tricks, experimentation, and that satisfying “WAIT—how did it do that?” moment.
This workshop encourages participants to look beyond the object in front of them and think about shape, space, and perspective in a completely different way.
Good to Know
A darker indoor space works best so the projected shadows are easy to see.
The project can be adapted with larger components, simplified construction, or additional assistance, making it accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities.
